New Art!

I’ve been working on a lot of fun projects lately, and while I can’t show all of it just yet, I’ve been given the go-ahead to post some of it.  Mostly I’ve been working on some new art for exciting future adventures by Thunderhead Games and Skirmisher Publishing, but in between I’m colouring a few of the previous illustrations from Ruins of Radagga.

(These are all watermarked because I do not hold the copyright and can not give permission to use these images.  If you like what you see, send me a message.  I would be happy to take individual commissions!)

I am also working on a new project of my own.  Well, a few new projects, but I’ve been planning this one in particular for a while.  People have asked me about a PDF collection of character designs, and I finally have some ideas to get me started.  The first collection is meant for a specific audience, but there will be more to come.  More on that later!

Work in Progress

I’ve been working on a new project for a gaming company and making good progress on it, but it’s going to be a while before I can post any of it.  In the interest of keeping this blog active, and because I’ve really been wanting to draw mermaids lately, here’s what I’ve been doing on the side.

I started by drawing the mermaid entirely in pencil, then scanned it and put it in Photoshop.  Then I added flat colours with a little bit of gradient to give it a shiny look.  Now I’m working on shading, highlights, and changing the colour of the lineart.  Later I’ll give the background more depth and detail.

Today I’m working more on freelance projects, but check back later and I might have more of this one done!

Keeping Busy

Hello!  My name is Vanessa Ellis.  I’m a freelance illustrator from the US, now living in London after getting married.  I’m not allowed to work right now (hopefully this will change by the end of the month), but I have so many personal projects to keep me busy while I wait.  Here’s a bit of what I’m working on right now:

  • Sketch Dailies:  This Twitter account gives a new drawing prompt every day.  I have fallen behind due to preparations for the next stage of my visa and other projects, but this has been getting me back into the habit of drawing every day.
  • Fan Art:  Before I moved, I had started on a series of drawings of awesome female characters from my childood, and now I’m getting back to that.  Currently I’m working on a drawing of Lt. Uhura from Star Trek to add to this collection!
  • Collaborations with my husband:  We’re working together on a fan comic for one of our favourite cartoons, the tragically short-lived Batman Beyond spinoff The Zeta Project.

There’s more to come.  In fact, I’m getting ready to sign off and get back to work on a few things.  Keep an eye on this blog for more updates!
